Genuine Matthews is a senior at St. Francis, who placed second in the 400-meter dash in last season’s track and field state meet. His boys’ basketball coach, Ryan Hauge, said Matthews’ speed makes him an elite defender. Matthews is committed to run track at North Dakota State next year.

Q: Does your track speed help your hoops game?

A: I use it to my advantage to get down the court quickly and break through the traps that are set when the opposite teams press. In the halfcourt, I use it to create a lot of separation between defenders and me.

Q: Is track and field your favorite sport? If so, why? If not, which sport is and why?

A: Track and field is my favorite sport. Before this past summer it was always basketball, but when I did summer AAU track and went to nationals in California, it opened my eyes about all the competition out there.

Q: Why did you pick North Dakota State to run track?

A: I went up there for a track and field visit, and I really enjoyed the company there. It felt right being up there in a sense. They offered a lot academically and in sports, so they really caught my attention and interest.

Q: Anything you don’t like about being considered fast?

A: When we do condition, I’m expected to be first every time.
